Matthew Carr

Industrial Designer

I'm an industrial designer focused on the combination of thoughtful design and precise engineering. I hold a deep respect for craftsmanship, design theory, material behavior, and the processes of creation. My work is shaped by a design thinking approach that balances research, iteration, and refinement.

I care deeply about precision in engineering development as a responsibility to the design intent, the maker, and the end user. I aim to create solutions that are considerate, informed, and enduring. I’m motivated by collaborative environments where design, engineering, and production inform one another.

Furnishings

The Vice Box

The Vice Box transcends ordinary storage solutions with its unique blend of quality materials and historic influences. Inspired by the Streamline Art Deco and English Club furniture periods, this functional vice-holding cabinet boasts monumental figures and classic materials meticulously crafted to create rounded shapes with strong vertical and horizontal lines.

Designed with attention to detail, the Vice Box features a top at standard bar height, a bottle stage for easy access to your favorite spirits, glass storage for elegant display, and cedar tobacco drawers for added convenience. Its thoughtful design and distinct historic influence earned it the prestigious title of “Best of Category Winner” for student occasional storage in the Fall 2022 ISFD Innovation+Design Competition.

The original prototype was produced in alder with the base finished with graphite in thinned shellac, the top cabinet piece wrapped inside and out in fine leather, and the small inner drawers constructed of Spanish cedar and left unfinished.

More than just a cabinet, the Vice Box is a specialty piece of artistic and innovative design that adds a touch of ceremony to any space. Elevate your storage game with the Vice Box and experience the perfect fusion of functionality and timeless aesthetics.

PUSH

PUSH uses quality materials coupled with attention to detail and craftsmanship to broadly represent the design elements of point, line, and plane.

Clear planes, light diffusing rods, and poured bubbles were all observed in research into these elements and carried into the material choices for PUSH, filling the opportunity to be conceptual in its focus on these elements while still being a useful table lamp.

PUSH had the honor of being selected as the “Best of Category Winner” for student lighting in the Fall 2022 ISFD Innovation+Design Competition.

The 9-Piece Low-back Cafe Chair

The 9 Piece Low-Back Cafe Chair is a sleek and modern seating option that combines commercial and industrial design influences for extreme manufacturability. Made of two acrylic pieces and seven stainless steel components, this chair is constructed with precision using exciting fabrication and assembly techniques. Pop rivets, stainless bolts, plastic washers, and rubber-bottomed feet are used for easy assembly. With options for custom powder coating of the frame and different colors of acrylic, this chair can be tailored to fit various design preferences. Its durability, low maintenance requirements, and mass reproducibility make it suitable for both residential and commercial use.

This chair was recognized as a student seating finalist in the 2023 ISFD Innovation+Design competition.

Live Edge Carport Bar

This nineteen-foot-long, two-inch-thick, live-edge counter is made of two sequentially cut black walnut slabs combined with one large locked scarf joint. 1/4” thick iron L-brackets hold this bar to the wall. 1/4” thick steel cables run through the slabs to angle iron above, ensuring proper support for plenty of patrons. Multiple layers of two-part epoxy and Gleam varnish will protect this pretty piece from the elements.

Manufacturing Engineering

Products pictured represent a selection of pieces developed and produced by Verellen to which I contributed across both design development and manufacturing engineering through:

  • Translating design intent into production-ready solutions from prototype through final manufacturing
  • Developing build packets to guide each piece from component fabrication through frame assembly, upholstery, and finishing
  • Designing plywood frame structures for CNC manufacturing, balancing form, function, and production efficiency
  • Creating accurate 2D drawings for client approval, internal development, and marketing use
  • Producing product information sheets and bills of materials (BOMs) to support communication across teams
  • Providing cut sheets and production plots to enable efficient and consistent fabrication
  • Planning and optimizing material usage in alignment with both design requirements and production needs
  • Identifying and resolving production challenges while maintaining the integrity of the original design intent

along with additional contributions supporting product development, refinement, and production.
